Effective WIL Programs for Indigenous Students at UBC
The Effective WIL Programs for Indigenous Students at UBC project is a collaborative effort between UBC’s Vancouver and Okanagan campuses. WIL Program Analysts Jackson Traplin and Jennifer Doyle have been engaging with students, industry, and Indigenous community partners in order to identify challenges to Indigenous students’ participation in WIL programs. Having identified these challenges and compared them with existing information concerning post-secondary student engagement in WIL, Jackson and Jennifer have begun the important work of creating opportunities for Indigenous students to take full advantage of UBC’s WIL programs. Creating a WIL resource guide for Indigenous students as well as central hub where UBC’s Indigenous student population can create a WIL-oriented community are central to Jackson and Jennifer’s work.
Key Learning Objectives:
Understanding Indigenous students’ unique challenges to WIL participation
Analyzing existing and new information that speaks to Indigenous students’ experiences of WIL programs
Applying the knowledge and data that we’ve gathered concerning Indigenous students and WIL in ways that allow these students to engage and excel in WIL programs
