Millennials, Xennials, Boomers, Generation Z – there are countless articles and research on how each new generation looks at the world of work and how to effectively connect with them. But what if your student body doesn’t fit in a neat little box? With Gen Z now entering post-secondary, how do we effectively communicate with a student and employer population that spans generations? What can we learn from research on generational differences to enhance our relationships with our diverse student stakeholder group?

We’ll open with a keynote address from SFU’s Darelle Odo, who will then facilitate a discussion with a student panel from various areas of WIL to tell us about their experiences in work integrated learning. We will then end the day with a sharing of best practices on student engagement!

A growing majority of undergraduate students today are Gen Z, born from 1995 – 2010. Are you curious about what has shaped Gen Z and what makes them tick? To learn more about this new cohort of students and how to best serve them, please join us for a 1-hour workshop. This interactive workshop will cover Gen Z’s traits, beliefs, trends, preferences and attitudes towards education and work. Please bring an internet enabled device so that we can do some live polling. Looking forward to a lively discussion!

Darelle Odo is a Co-op Coordinator with SFU’s Beedie School of Business. After completing a BCom at UVic (including 3 co-op work terms, I might add), Darelle started her career in ‘industry’, working in HR and Recruitment for 5 years at a recruitment agency, forestry company and a tech company. While she was completing her part time MBA, she was inspired by her MBA Career Coach to pursue a career in higher ed, so she joined SFU’s Co-op team in May 2017. She has now worked with about 750 co-op students and 250 employers, gaining perspective on Gen Z. She’s looking forward to presenting her findings on Gen Z as well as learning from the wealth of knowledge at the event.
