The Staff Award of Excellence: Cultivating the Co-op Employee Experience recognizes BC Public Service employees who have helped create a positive and valuable work experience for a co-op employee. Any BC Public Service employee may be nominated for this award provided the nominee has demonstrated excellence in training, mentoring and supporting a co-op employee.

The winner of the winter 2018 Staff Award of Excellence is Renée Mulligan, legal counsel, Ministry of Attorney General. Renée was nominated by Leanna Gruendel, a co-op employee she supervises, and chosen from among 16 nominations in 12 ministries. According to Leanna, Renée “went above and beyond typical responsibilities to ensure I could excel in my role.”

Renée’s continuous guidance and discussions with Leanna about her interests enabled her to work on projects she may not have known about. Leanna now has a revamped work goal that she is excited to pursue, and more knowledge and skills to help her along the path. Renée also demonstrated and championed the corporate plan goals of building our internal capacity and improving our competitiveness by playing a key role in consistently supporting co-op students within their branch, and by speaking at the University of Victoria’s Law Co-op class.

Leanna sums it up best when she says, “Overall, Renée was an exemplary supervisor, and I am incredibly grateful to have been able to learn from her over my co-op term. She has inspired me to enhance my legal skills, act with integrity and innovation, and to pursue a long-term career with the BC Public Service.”

Congratulations to Renée, and to all the nominees for their efforts in supporting co-op employees!
