President's Message

Dear ACE-WIL Members:

In the words of one of my favourites, “I am so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers” (L.M. Montgomery). October, to me, is the sigh of relief as a very busy September gives way to the constant hum of liveliness of the rest of the Fall term.
This Fall, we have a number of events for ACE-WIL members. Please tune into our upcoming Town Hall at noon on October 27th, where we will be further examining how to support our students through this unusual academic year. Check out our website for more events this term, including professional development, upcoming employer panels, and more!

At our last Town Hall, we shared the results of a survey to employers and BC Chamber of Commerce members, as part of one of the provincially funded projects. The final survey findings are currently being synthesized into a report, which we will have available in the members-only area of our website in the coming weeks.

I will sign off by saying thank you again for rising to the challenges we face and continuing to support each other in the work that we do. I look forward to seeing you on October 27th!

Warm regards,

ACE-WIL Town Hall October 27 – Support Strategies

This year, in conjunction with BCcampus, we’ve offered town hall sessions for members to connect as we all work to deal with the impacts of the pandemic and the recovery. Coming together has helped us as we all adapt, and we’re offering another town hall for October.

During our September town hall, a major theme arose around supporting our students’ mental health, learning and development, and individual needs as we navigate our current virtual reality. Join us on October 27th at noon as we take a deeper dive into supporting our students through this extraordinary time.

Date: Tuesday, October 27th
Time: 12:00pm -1:00pm
Location: Via Zoom through BCcampus

Upcoming webinar series to show workplaces ways to engage WIL students

As businesses and organizations adapt to the demands of the pandemic, they're looking at news ways of doing things. And that includes considering whether post-secondary students can help them pivot during the recovery. They know that students bring creativity, new skills and energy to an organization. However, bringing a student onboard may seem overwhelming, especially given all that's going on. …

ACE-WIL’s Post an Opportunity portal gets a refresh

chemical engineers in laboratory
We’ve made some updates to ACE-WIL’s Post an Opportunity page. The changes make it easier to use and include an explanation about how the process works. We’re also able to capture information on where people learned about the portal. And, for those who are interested in keeping in touch with ACE-WIL, there’s an option for them to join the “Friends of ACE-WIL” mailing list. If your contacts are looking for a one-stop portal to share their posting with a number of institutions, this is a great place to direct them.

ACE-WIL PD Committee Update

Unconscious Bias Training with Alden Habacon

The Professional Development Committee is pleased to welcome Alden Habacon to facilitate this year's fall Professional Development opportunity. In this three-part interactive virtual workshop, Alden will lead participants in developing a technical understanding of inclusion on campus, identifying unconscious bias, and learning strategies for disrupting unconscious bias. The concepts covered are especially important to our work as WIL Practitioners, and will be a significant benefit not just to one’s own practice, but ultimately to the students we support.

More information on the session outcomes is available here.

About the sessions:
  1. A Technical Understanding of Fostering Inclusion on Campus
    • November 12th 1:00pm-2:30pm
